When would you have preferred to live

An interesting evening attended by eight members with very varied preferences.

The earliest period chosen was the Minoan culture with its advantages of the beautiful surroundings of Crete, warm climate and fabulous temples.

Being a Celtic woman at the time of Boudicca was another choice because of the advanced fair society which existed and the rights and respect given to women, which were exceptional for the time.

Moving on we had preferences for the 18 th century Period of Enlightenment, with its philosophical movement and thinkers, the Regency period, on condition that you were born into the aristocracy and could grace the elegant buildings in your empire line dresses and the Victorian era with its books, poetry and music and the beginnings of social help and welfare.

In the 20 th century the 1950’s were chosen as an ideal time to be growing up, with more freedom and fewer pressures and a longer, more innocent period of childhood.

Finally we looked to the future and a desire to return in fifty or a hundred years to see just what developments, whether good or bad, had taken place.

In conclusion we felt that most of us were happy with our present lot. Fears about the harsh conditions in the past for most people, lack of medical treatment and creature comforts outweighing some of the more appealing aspects of earlier periods.
