Newspaper Headlines
This was a well attended meeting. The idea was very simple. Everyone brought along a few newspaper headlines, with a word or two blanked out, along with the news article itself.
The headlines were put into a basket, which was passed round, and in turn we pulled out a headline at random. First of all we all had to try to guess the missing word. We then discussed those news items which we found particularly interesting.
We covered such topics as eco-towns, care of the elderly, the new pre-school curriculum, jet-lag, recycling, local provision of sports facilities, school summer holidays, the Eurovision song contest and many others.
Many of the topics would have provided a whole evening’s discussion – and may yet appear on the next programme. In the end we had to call time. We felt that this was an idea which could well be repeated in the future, as it certainly generated some lively discussion, and would throw up different topics every time.
