Last Thursday, July 10 th, we had planned an evening based around activities in our garden. Initially we were able to follow the “plant trail” outside, but after about half an hour we had to retreat indoors as the rain was very heavy indeed. Nevertheless, everyone was able to identify plants from photos and to match them up with specimens in the garden: not always easy as it has not been a good year for flowers this year- the garden looks very green. There was also enough time outdoors to compile lists of edible plants in the garden with enjoyment and accuracy.
The evening was brightened by the three cakes with a mystery vegetable ingredient that Pam had baked; the vegetables had to be identified, which of course involved sampling. Carrot and parsnip were easy, but nobody managed to identify the courgette.
Crossword and anagram plant questions proved popular and were attempted with great accuracy. Quotations about gardens and plants were less easily identified. Perhaps there is an opportunity here for future book group reading?
In the end it was a close run to the finish between the two teams, but everyone was most kind and appreciative in their comments about the evening.
